Phantom frequencies
Concept sketch showing speaker placement and cancellation zones
Multi-channel installation | 2025 | Duration: variable (in development)
An ongoing investigation into the sounds that exist in the gaps - frequencies that emerge from interference, resonance, and the spaces between intended signals.
The work explores what happens when we listen not to the source, but to what the source creates in its absence.
Phantom frequencies - those that appear through cancellation, through room modes, through the interaction of systems that weren’t designed to interact.
Currently exploring:
- Room tone as composition
- Interference patterns between multiple sound sources
- The resonant frequencies of empty spaces
- What remains when the primary signal is removed
Early experiments suggest the piece will use multiple speakers positioned to create zones of cancellation and reinforcement, allowing listeners to move through different acoustic territories.
The work challenges the assumption that silence is absence - proposing instead that silence is full of frequencies we’re not hearing, or hearing only as absence.
